Here’s a breakdown of the three layers:

• Outer Layer: This layer is typically made of a hydrophobic (water-repelling) material, such as spun-bond polypropylene, to prevent the penetration of respiratory droplets, water, and other fluids.
• Middle Layer: This is the filtration layer, often made of melt-blown polypropylene, which utilizes electrostatic properties to trap tiny particles and microorganisms. It’s crucial for filtering out dust, pollen, bacteria, and viruses.
• Inner Layer: This layer is made of a soft and absorbent non-woven material, such as spun-bond polypropylene or similar materials, and rests against the wearer’s face, ensuring comfort and absorbing moisture from exhaled breath.

In terms of filtration effectiveness, studies show that 3-ply surgical masks demonstrate significant protection against bacterial and particle penetration, with filtration efficiencies typically ranging from >95% to 99%. However, it’s important to note that the effectiveness can be significantly impacted by the fit of the mask, with studies suggesting that even a 1% leak can decrease filtration efficiency by 50%.

It’s also worth noting that while 3-ply masks offer effective protection in general, they are generally not classified as medical-grade masks. Medical-grade masks, like surgical masks, undergo additional testing and adhere to stricter standards for use in healthcare environments.
