DJ STENT

A Double J (DJ) stent is a temporary, flexible, hollow tube inserted into the ureter to ensure a clear flow of urine from the kidney to the bladder. Both ends are curled, or “J-shaped,” to anchor the stent in place—one end in the kidney’s renal pelvis and the other in the bladder.

Purpose and function

A DJ stent is primarily used to relieve or bypass obstructions in the ureter. It provides several key functions in urological care:

• Relieves blockage: It facilitates urine drainage when the ureter is blocked by kidney stones, blood clots, or tumors.
• Aids healing: The stent helps the ureter heal after surgery, such as after a kidney stone is removed via ureteroscopy. It prevents the ureter from narrowing due to swelling during recovery.
• Reduces pain: By preventing pressure buildup in the kidney caused by an obstruction, a DJ stent can alleviate the severe pain associated with conditions like kidney stones.
• Facilitates stone passage: The stent can help the passage of small to medium-sized stones by widening the ureter.
