Key components of a Foley catheter include the catheter tube, a balloon for anchoring, drainage eyelets, an inflation valve, a connector, and a urine collection bag.

Materials and sizes

Foley catheters are made from materials such as latex, silicone, and Teflon, with silicone often preferred for long-term use. Sizes are measured in French gauge (Fr), ranging from 8 Fr to 20 Fr, with larger numbers indicating larger diameters. Common adult sizes are 14 Fr and 16 Fr. Silicon catheters of various sizes are also available to us.

Types of Foley catheters

Different types exist, such as the 2-way catheter (most common with two lumens), the 3-way catheter (with an extra lumen for bladder irrigation).

Uses

Foley catheters are used to drain urine in various situations, including urinary incontinence or retention, enlarged prostate, post-surgical care, nerve-related bladder issues, monitoring critically ill patients, controlling bleeding, and administering bladder medication.

Risks and complications

The main risk is urinary tract infections (UTIs), with the risk increasing with prolonged use. Other potential complications include bladder spasms, leakage, bleeding, and urethral injury. Therefore, their use should be limited to when necessary and for the shortest possible duration.
