Gamjee Roll

A Gamjee roll is a surgical dressing made from a thick, highly absorbent layer of cotton wool enclosed in a layer of absorbent, fine-mesh gauze. It was invented in 1880 by Birmingham surgeon Joseph Sampson Gamgee and is still a standard supply used in hospitals and first-aid kits today.

Composition and properties

• Layered structure: It consists of three layers: an inner core of soft, fluffy, absorbent cotton wool, wrapped between two layers of gauze.
• Highly absorbent: The compressed cotton core efficiently absorbs blood, wound exudates, and other fluids, helping to keep the wound clean and dry.
• Low-adherent: The outer gauze covering prevents the absorbent cotton from sticking directly to the wound surface, which helps prevent trauma during dressing changes.
• Breathable: The construction allows for good air circulation, which aids in the healing process.
• Protective cushioning: The soft, thick padding provides excellent cushioning and protection for the wound from external trauma and pressure.

• Wound dressing: Used for dressing cuts, burns, and surgical incisions, particularly when dealing with heavy discharge or bleeding.
• First aid: An essential item in first aid kits for treating a variety of injuries.
• Orthopedic padding: Used to provide cushioning under plaster casts, especially around bony areas, to prevent pressure sores and burns.
• Surgical padding: Utilized in surgical procedures and post-operative care for wound support and fluid management.
